CLDH - Libanese Center for Human Rights
Location : Beyrouth
Creation : 2006
Local issues : Lebanon is facing an extremely difficult sociopolitical and economic situation. Hindered by external factors, including the Syrian conflict, the country faces a long political crisis. With a population of 4 million, the country must face a challenge with more than one million Syrian refugees, constituting one quarter of its total population. Other than a unstable conditions, the country is faced with recurrent problems. The issue of torture remains particularly significant. While Lebanon has ratified the Convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment as well as its optional Protocol, the UN Committee against Torture has found, following a visit in October 2014, that it remained a ‘largely widespread practice’.
Missions : The CLDH denounces and fights against the use of torture, arbitrary detentions, forced disappearances and impunity of grave violations of human rights. It uses the national and international remedies, provides an individual and personalized support to the victims and their families and carries out inquiries and recollection of testimonies whilst broadcasting information through press releases and reports. In October 2007, the association inaugurated a Centre of Assistance to Torture Victims and their Families – the Nassim Centre – which offers a multidisciplinary support (medical, psychological, social, professional and legal). The CLDH is also committed in the defence of migrant’s rights and mostly of domestic workers victims of exploitation and inhuman treatment.
Important : The CLDH has taken on and continues on the ground the activities of the SOLIDA association (Soutient aux Libanais Detenues Arbitrairement) founded in 1996 in France. Its members have been victims of intimidation and the team suffers regular acts of harassment, including legalones.
