Local issues : According to the UN, 100 to 140 million women in the word have been victims of female mutilation. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), even though illegal in many countries, remains a widespread practice in Africa, particularly in Mali where 85 % of women are subjected to female mutilation. This practice – a terrible infringement of the fundamental rights of young girls and women, violates the absolute right to the dignity of the human body. The eradication of female genital mutilation can only be achieved through the implementation of a real political determination and through a progressive shift in the mentalities.
