Local issues: A 2011 study by the Gabonese Observatory of Children’s Rights revealed that 77 % of children are victims of physical, psychological, moral and sexual violence. 40.6 % of the violence happens at home, 32.4 % in the community, 12.9 % at school, 1.4% at the hand of the justice system and 0.2% in care facilities for troubled children.
Missions: Samba Mwanas’s objective is to promote and protect children’s rights, educate children on their rights in order to prevent violence against them and to raise awareness among the population on the extent of the phenomenon of violence and sexual abuse against Gabonese children.
Important: Samba Mwanas is the only Gabonese association that works specifically on the issue of violence and sexual abuse against children. Between 2012 and 2015, the association carried out awareness campaigns in 114 schools. Upon completion of the awareness sessions, 2 116 students confessed being subjected to sexual abuse or ill-treatment. The association carried out a register of those cases as well as a psychological support and advocacy actions with the Gabonese authorities.

Our partnership: In the context of the DEFI project, AEDH supports the general functioning of the association and the creation of two listening and counseling centres to bring support to children victims of mistreatment and sexual abuse.
