Local issues: North Kivu is victim of a recurring instability since 1996 and the beginning of the civil war that devastated the Democratic Republic of Congo. Civilians are constantly faced with security problems and are the victims of abuses. Beni territory (Mbau sector), in which numerous armed groups strike, is particularly exposed. Many civilian massacres are perpetrated there with impunity since November 2014.
Missions: Founded in 2009, Vughuma is based in the Beni territory - sector Mbau / North Kivu. The organization goals are to promote and defend the rights of women who have been displaced by the the Virunga National Park land conflicts.
The organization is primarily involved in training activities on rights and on women promotion at the economic and social, and cultural and political levels. It wishes to promote women participation in local bodies of decision making.
AEDH partnership: since 2014.
AEDH support: In 2014, VUGHUMA received a grant from DECLIK for its project on women's leadership strengthening within families and communities of the Babila Bakaiku villages.
In 2016, AEDH has helped to fund an action of paternity acknowledgement and access to civil status for illegitimate and neglected children in 10 villages of the Beni Mbau sector.
